OVERVIEW OF THE HISTORY OF GEORGIA 9000 B.C to 2013
The country of Georgia has a vast history. It is one of the oldest regions in the world, with settlements established in the Southern Caucus area around 9000 B.C. By 6000 B.C. people began to domesticate and breed animals.
In 304 B.C. King Parnavaz the First created the first Georgian state, the Kingdom of Kartli. Soon after in in 285 B.C. he created Georgia’s alphabet.
Christianity was introduced by St.Nino and was adopted as the official religion in 326 A.D.
In the 19th century Georgia was established as a Soviet Socialist Republic after the invasion of the Red Army in 1921 and did not regain freedom until April 9th, 1991. At this time the Soviet Union had collapsed and the Parliament of Georgia declared secession from the Soviet Union in favor of independence.
In 1994 Georgia created a new constitution, highlighting its independence and establishment as a democratic republic.
In 2003, the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline began to be built between Turkey, Georgia, and Azerbaijan to transport crude oil. This pipeline was completed in 2006. Georgia’s independence and secession from the Soviet Union in 1994 created tension between Georgia and South Ossetia. By 2008 this tension finally bubbled over causing Georgia to retaliate against South Ossetia in an effort to overtake them by force. South Ossetia was not overtaken as it is protected by Russia. In 2010, Georgia began to make political changes by the approval of constitutional updates by Parliament that would increase the power of the Prime Minister and Parliament by 2013 election. In 2013, a new President was elected along with the appointment of a new Prime Minister. The next few years for Georgia will show how much this shift in power does or does not affect how their Government is run.
